It was a tough day on the diamond for Albany State baseball, as they took a 13-3 donkey-kicking from the Warhawks of Auburn University Wednesday night at the AUM Baseball Complex in Montgomery, Alabama.
The Golden Rams found themselves in a 6-0 hole after just one inning of play in a frame that saw them give up the first run of the game before the Warhawks got their first hit of the night, as four of the first AUM batters reached base via walks. AUM tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second to push their lead to 9-0.
Albany State scored two in the top of the third, the first coming on a throwing error and the second on a ground out, to make the score 9-2.
The Golden Rams handed the Warhawks two more runs in the bottom of the fouth, with both coming on walks. Clayton Phillips was it by a pitch that plated Jake Spivey to bring the score to 10-2. One batter later, Cooper Doughman was able to force another walk that brought home Cole McWhorter, to make the score 11-2.
Albany State scored their last run of the day came on a Chase Karn sacrifice fly that brought home Tucker Jordan. The Warhawks were not done, tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the 8th on a pair of RBI singles from Zach Dew and Jarren Wright to bring the score to its final count of 13-3.
The victory lifts AUM to 17-22 on the season, while Albany State drops to 23-8.
Up next for the Golden Rams is a trip to Fairfiled, Alabama for a three-game series with the Golden Bears of Miles College that starts on Friday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 PM CST.
